Delilah Simms is an attractive high school senior who is
being bullied by a cruel group of girls she calls the Imitators. As if the
emotional harassment isn’t enough, she is also trying to heal from the sudden,
tragic loss of her younger sister, Darcy—whom her mother believes is sending
messages from beyond the grave. On the verge of a breakdown, Delilah meets
River Spencer—a handsome young man who she’s instantly attracted to. Although
River seems perfect, Delilah can’t ignore the gnawing feeling that River is
hiding something and that he may just be the biggest imitator of all.

River smiled and looked at his phone. “Oh, great,”
he said sarcastically.
“What’s the matter?”
“My phone just died. My charger is in my car.”
“Why don’t we just do it the old-fashioned way and
use paper and a pen?” she asked.
He laughed. “I think we sometimes complicate things
with all the technology. I do have a pen in my car. I drove up from Miami. It
took more than twenty-four hours, but it’s been worth it just to have my own
car. I didn’t want to rely on borrowing my uncle’s. I’m parked in the lot
behind the track. Do you want to take a walk with me?”
Delilah hesitated for a moment—without realizing
why. “I’ll walk over with you.” She was curious to see what kind of car he
drove, among other things.
They passed plenty of empty spots as they walked
toward his car. River must have known what she was thinking because he said, “I
always like to park my car away from the other cars. It keeps it from getting
dinged.”
When they got to his
car, she saw that it wasn’t really a car at all, but a Jeep. It was even nicer
than she imagined. It fit him perfectly—sporty and neat. As he pulled his keys
out of his pocket, he dropped them on the floor. He looked up at her and said,
“Butterfingers.” That’s the last thing Delilah remembered before she screamed.
